USA 2-0 Bosnia and Herzegovina

The USMNT haven't won a World Cup knockout game since 2002. Today presents a very good opportunity to progress but Bosnia won’t make it easy

The first half was tight, the US dominated the ball but was unable to break down Bosnia’s defense. In the 45th minute, Tillman played a pass to Balogun, after a couple of deflections the ball fell straight to his feet inside the box and he slotted it past the goalie to make it 1-0.

The US were dominating in the 2nd half but in the 62nd minute Balogun accidentally stomped on a Bosnia player's ankle. He wasn’t looking at the ball and meant no harm but it was deemed a serious foul and he was sent off. The US would have to play the rest of the match with 10 men. The US sat back and withstood heavy pressure from Bosnia. They defended well and in the 82nd minute were able to get the ball up the pitch and win a free kick 20 yards from goal. Up stepped Mark Tillman who placed the ball into the bottom corner past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. The US was able to see out the rest of the match and confirm their place in the round of 16

The US performed brilliantly today. The team faced their first bit of adversity of the tournament and responded well. "I'm incredibly proud of this team," Pochettino said after the final whistle. "Today it's not only about the victory itself, but about how we achieved it. That's a really important point. You can win, but the decisive thing is the way you win." The US will face Belgium, a rematch of 2014, on Monday July 8th.
