USA 2-0 Australia

The USMNT had an amazing first game but would they be able to keep up their form? Australia shocked the world with a 2-0 win over Türkiye in their first match and were hoping to do the same to the US.

The US started the match on the front foot with lots of energy once again. In the 11th minute, Balogun received the ball on the wing and went on a powerful run into the box. He passed the ball into the middle which ended up taking a deflection off Australian defender Cameron Burgess into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to the US. In the 43rd minute the US had a freekick. They played it short to Sergino Dest who shot the ball right outside the box. The ball took a deflection off an Australian defender and went into the air, sending the goalie the wrong way. As the ball came down US defender Alex Freemen was able to head it into an empty net. 2-0 for the US just before half time.

Not much happened in the second half. Australia had a couple of shots but the US defended well and saw the game out winning 2-0. Another strong performance by the Americans especially with star player Pulisic out. With the win the US are guaranteed to finish top of their group.

“I saw a team that really believes in what it is doing,” said Head Coach Pochettino. “I think only I can say good, fantastic things about my players, about the squad. They were fantastic.” The US face Türkiye in their final group game on Thursday June 25th.
