Türkiye 3-2 USA

This last group stage game didn’t have any stakes for either team. Türkiye are already mathematically knocked out while the US are confirmed to finish first. Due to the low stakes Pochettino decided to rest some starters. He only started Weston Mckennie and Riccardo Pepi from the last win vs Australia.

The US started the match well and had a corner in the 3rd minute. Berhalter swung the corner to the back post where Auston Trusty took a touch and struck the ball past the keeper to make it 1-0 to the US. In the 10th minute Türkiye had a counter attack. Yilmaz put Arda Guler through on goal who slotted it past the Goalie to equalize for Türkiye. In the 34th minute after a well worked move, Türkiye's Orkun Kökcü was behind the US defense and cut the ball back to Yilmaz who scored to put Türkiye in the lead. An exciting end to the first half.

In the 49th minute the US took a long throw that caused a scramble in the box before eventually falling to Sebastian Berhalter just outside the box who unleashed a powerful shot into the bottom corner to equalize. The US was the better team but were unable to break down the Türkiye defense. In the very last minute of the game a cross was played into Türkiye's Mert Müldür who was free in the box, he was able to find Kaan Ayhan to tap the ball into the net to win the game for Türkiye.

Although this game doesn’t affect the US’s place in 1st there’s an argument that playing a weaker 11 will lose the US some momentum in the knockout round. "The mood is like we are going home tonight and Türkiye is staying," U.S. coach Pochettino said about the press room. "I need to remind you and everyone that we won the group. Sorry guys, we won." I agree with Pochettino, there’s a lot of games and he was able to rest a majority of the squad and get Pulisic some minutes. Next the US face off against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 on July 1st.
